Jurel Yap is a PhD candidate at Griffith University (Queensland Australia), School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Previous to his PhD, he was a Program Manager and Statistician at the Ateneo Policy Center, School of Government, Ateneo de Manila University (Quezon City, Philippines), where he currently still serves as a Non-Resident Research Fellow.

His core research interests are in the intersection of quantitative methods and social science research, applied to geographical and survey data. He uses his advanced data analysis skills to explore a variety of research areas and has published articles on topics like crime and punishment, political economy, political violence, youth, and misinformation, with a particular focus on the Philippines.

Jurel’s PhD research investigates the impact of high local imprisonment rates on young people at the community level in Australia. He uses linked administrative datasets at a small geographical level to conduct robust statistical analyses and explore these relationships.

Jurel finished his Master of Science (Statistics) from the University of the Philippines Diliman. He earned a double bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Development Studies, with a minor in Economics, from Ateneo de Manila University, where he was an active student leader.
